Mother of all traffic jams

It's 2300HST and this is a few shots from the trafffic cam's on island for the west side effected by the closure of the H 1 freeway. Wow. This is the worst traffic jam I have ever seen. This all started at 1300 this afternoon .

This traffic mess still had olong lasting effects on the traffic flow the morning after it happened.

Makes me wonder how this state would react to a major catastrophe where all 3 major highways are disabled by terrorists. The 'aloha spirit' will only work for so long...

traffic jams in hawaii. i remember when i was driving down H-1 and traffic came to a dead stop. i looked down the road about 300 yards, and a couple of cars had stopped, in the lanes!, and the people in the cars bailed out, walked across the lanes to the other direction, and started talking to someone in a car on the shoulder in the opposite lanes.
i was so pissed i couldn't see, but was told that wasn't all that uncommon. i doesn't look like things have changed since the late 70's

A friend of mine was caught down town when this happened. Thank God I wasn't in that mess or I would have had a serious case of road rage.

It took some people, actually thousands of people, 5 hours just to go 7 miles, including my buddy.

As I was formulating a letter to the DoT, Mayor and Governor of HI about future catastrophe's caused by accidents, natural disasters, or even a terrorist strike my mind started wandering.

All it took to incapacitatte an island for 20 hours was a vehicle slamming into a pedestrian overpass. One-third of Hawaii's major thoroughfare was choked off from the rest of the island while repairs were being made.

A coordinated strike against all 3 major highways on Oahu would paralyze the state and rescue and police forces would be unable to respond to anything.

Hmm. I think I just found my next blog entry. Thanks for posting about this mess. I was too tired and pissed to mention it.

Hey, that's me in that bottom picture! See the lights 359 headlights lights back in the center lane?

It boggles the mind to think that all it takes is a truck running into an over pass to cause havoc on the commute home. The island was paralyzed.

Just think of the chaos if a few well planted bombs on H-1, H-2, and H-3 were to disrupt the flow of traffic?
